Rallying Around Riccio
By VINCENT PATERNO, Editor
WARREN TWP.(Echos-Sentinel) - When times are difficult, a community will often band together.

And so it is for the community of people who care about Carl Riccio, the Watchung Hills Regional High School wrestler who suffered a severe neck injury during a match at Newton High School Saturday, Feb. 22. Moreover, this community is far bigger than just about anyone ever imagined. "He's been getting cards from all over the country," Watchung Hills Principal Tom DiGanci said Monday, March 3. "It's truly remarkable."

Remains Hospitalized
Riccio, a junior who was one of the state's top 189-pound wrestlers prior to his injury, remains at Morristown Memorial Hospital, where officials said Monday, March 3 they declined to update his condition at the request of his family. He is still recuperating from his injuries and cannot receive phone calls or visits, according to his wrestling coach, Dan Smith. "It will take time to see progress. Be patient," Smith wrote on behalf of the Riccio family at the team's Web site. "It generally takes one to two weeks for any bruised area to begin to show signs of progress and healing. At this point Carl needs complete rest for his entire body so that all his energy and resources will go towards healing." Those in the Watchung Hills area have shown their support for Riccio. Students have worn T-shirts and sweatshirts marked with Carl's name to wrestling meets and basketball games since the accident occurred. So have those in state wrestling circles. At the District 12 tournament in South Plainfield over the weekend, it was announced that Riccio was selected outstanding wrestler by tourney coaches and officials, even though he didn't participate.

Support From The Web
On a Web site created to display e-mails of support - such as from Bill Racich, wrestling coach at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa., who said, "The entire wrestling world is praying for you...you're a champion in every aspect of the word" - more than a few letters are from those who aren't associated with wrestling or New Jersey. They include the Lehigh University women's lacrosse team of Bethlehem, Pa., who said, "We read of your injury and want to extend our sincere wishes for your recovery. Our thoughts are with you as you heal and begin your rehabilitation." Others know Riccio from his baseball exploits, where he is a shortstop. "I first met you over the summer through baseball...when we got to play for the same team, you truly welcomed me as if you had known me all your life and made me feel like I fit right in with all you guys," a young South Plainfield man said. Words of support hailed from as far away as Minnesota, where the writer told the story of a friend who wrestled, was diagnosed with cancer and is now cancer-free. "During his toughest times he would talk about his toughest battle...with himself," the e-mail said. "Keep yourself positive, stay tough and keep fighting." DiGanci said he was proud of the resolve those at Watchung Hills had shown, and of their support for Riccio. "This is an amazing community, for what we've been through this past month," he said. During February, sophomore Jason Oh died after a long battle with leukemia; a 1999 graduate, Adrian A. Cummings, was killed in an automobile accident in Madison; and former superintendent and principal Joseph P. Sabo passed away.
