Riccio moved to Kessler; rehabilitation continues

WARREN TWP. - In what may be a hopeful sign for his progress and recovery, injured Watchung Hills Regional High School wrestler Carl Riccio has been moved from Morristown Memorial Hospital to the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange.

Carl Riccio started wrestling when he was 4 years old. The third of five children in a sports-centered family, he showed a tenacious desire to learn and win at a young age in the physically demanding sport.

Riccio, whose neck was injured during a match in Newton Saturday, Feb. 22 and was soon flown by helicopter to Morristown Memorial, was there for slightly more than two weeks. During that time, he was unable to receive guests because of the severity of the injury.

Kessler, founded in 1948, is regularly regarded as one of the nation's premier rehabilitation hospitals. It has treated many people recuperating from spinal cord-related injuries, including actor Christopher Reeve.

Riccio, one of the state's top wrestlers in the 189-pound weight class prior to his injury, has received an outpouring of encouragement from wrestlers and fans at both Watchung Hills and from throughout the country.
