Dear Carl,

My name is Darren Rabinowitz and I am a wrestler at Frelinghuysen Middle School in Morristown, NJ. I will be 13 on September 29.

During a wrestling tournament I broke my right arm on the same day that you had your accident. Both of us were in Morristown Memorial Hospital on the same day.

I had a couple of operations over the last 2 years to put pins in my arms and then to take them out again. It took a long time to heal and I could not do any sports, not even recess. My arm is now almost 100% better and I am back at wrestling.

My family and I think about you often. As part of my Bar Mitzvah project I will be running in the Berkeley Heights 5K race organized by Dr. Pat Smith because I know that some of the money will be donated to the Carl Riccio Special Needs Trust. I will be running with your "Ultimate Warrior T-shirt". I think it is a really cool shirt.

We are always thinking about you and I hope that one day I can meet you,

Sincerely,

Darren

Betty Van Wagener 9/6/2005 1:22:00 AM

Hi Carl, My name is Betty and I am the mother of another remarkable young man like you. David was injured in a fall while skiing in Colorado in December of 2002. He had returned the night before from his first semester at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. David is also a C4/5 quad, but persevered through rehab and with a lot of determination like you, he returned to Bucknell in August after his accident. David is studying Chemical engineering--we even toured Villanova when he was looking at colleges. His school has been amazing and he has been very successful academically like you. He has loyal friends and college life has been a lot of fun for him--well, as much fun as it can be for someone studying engineering! He graduates in May and it will be quite a celebration for all of us. I am so glad to hear that you too have gone on with your life and it sounds like you will make the most of it like David. I have met many remarkable people in wheelchairs with the same positive attitude. I wish you all the best. If you want to check out David's website or leave a message for him you can do so at: www.vanwagener.net/david. Good luck in school this semester. My prayers are with you.

Carl, Congratulations on your role with Sen. Corzine and his plans to advance stem cell research. You did a great job and I know it's not easy to have all those cameras in your face.
I continue to admire your character and your courage. Keep up the good work and we'll keep you all in our prayers.

Hi Carl, We all had a great time at Jessica's wedding. I was happy to get to see you and your dorm at Villanova. I tried to watch the news yesterday, but I must have missed it. I hope it gets on your web-site. I did see you today in the Star Ledger. I am so proud of you, now and always. All the work you, your mother, your father,Governor Corzine and so many others are doing WILL pay off in the end. Good luck this semester. I will see you at some point the day of the golf outing.
Aunt Renee 9/15/2005 9:43:08 PM

Carl,
It was great to see you and your whole family these past few weekends. It's been so much fun! There are so many special messages on the message board lately. The young man who's mother wrote to you is in a similar situation as you, and is also doing well in college. The boy who got hurt the same day as you, and was in the same hospital, thinks so highly of you.
I got the Star Ledger today, I'm really proud of you
and your Mom. I also read the message from your Dad , he loves you so much. Being a parent, I can relate to every word he says.
You are blessed to be loved so much by so many people.
