To Carl's father,

Your updates are eagerly read and always filled with messages about hope, love and prayer that are common across so many faiths and religions.

You remind us that we all have much to be thankful for as we approach another Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Happy turkey to all the Riccios!!

Dear Carl,

*Hugs* I admire your strength and courage! (And your gorgeous too ;-) I actually was one of the many people that had sent an email in support of stem cell research. How unfortunate that some members of your church are not so supportive of the decision to support stem cell research to treat those with neurological problems or injuries. Perhaps any one of them would feel differently if they had a loved one (of course I'm not wishing ill will on anyone ;) in a similiar situation where that type of treatment would help them improve their quality of life. The Lord wants what is best for people especially health-wise no matter what the bible says.

I'm not going to say that I know what it's like for you and I'm not saying "poor me," but I do empathize with you as I happen to have a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from using inhalants (inhaling fumes from household products like glues, paints, or gasoline) and deal with the consequences of my actions each day, every day. I may write coherently, but I have so much irreversable damage and problems.

I may have posted about it before but I have such trouble with my memory, and I apologize if I'm repeating myself. I have such severe dizziness that sometimes I must stay in bed. I have poor balance and coordination due to damage to the cerebellum in my brain and have a nystagmus (quick, involuntary eye movement) because of the cerebellar damage, making it difficult to read words and follow objects. I sometimes slur my words (dysarthria), have word-finding problems (problems finding words when wanting to speak, even simple ones) have trouble with reading comprehension or understanding what someone says to me (auditory processing).

My Attention span and ability to concentrate is ridiculously low. I no longer am able to swim (I was an avid swimmer), go

Hi Carl :-) I apologize that I had too many words in my first message ;) I was talking about how using inhalants gave me a brain injury and how the damage has impacted on my life. I'm no longer able to do anything that makes a person feel unsteady or dizzy like amusement rides or swimming as I'd said. I'd mentioned about trouble with balance and coordinaton and usually feel unsteady or dizzy when walking or standing. I have a lot of bone marrow (fatty inner lining of bones) damage as I have a severe grating at the back of my neck when nodding up and down or even just moving my head a little bit. I have a lot of nerve damage/numbness to my face, hands and even scalp, and the nerve damage to my face makes it difficult to smile. I'm not trying to compete with you ;-) I'm just saying that I can identify with you, someone's life that has changed so unexpectedly. I'd like to send an email to the carlricciotrust the message that I've been sending to various other yahoogroups warning parents, teachers, and students alike of the dangers of 'huffing.' Perhaps that will bring quality of life to others. Take good care

HEY CARL!

HI,

WELL, O\ OHIO STATE TROUNCED MICHIGAN TODAY, DIDN'T THEY? OKLAHOMA REALLY GAVE BAYLOR THE BUSINESS! I SURE HOPE THEY WILL MAINTAIN THE NUMBER TWO RANKING IN THE BCS POLLS. JIM TRESSEL AT OHIO STATE REALLY HAD HIS JOB CUT OUT FOR HIM TODAY...THERE WAS TALK THAT IF HE DIDN'T BEAT MICHIGAN HIS JOB MAY BE IN JEOPARDY...HE IS A REALLY NICE GUY. HE DOESN'T DESERVE ALL THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING HIS TEAM.

MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR WENT TO OKLAHOMA FOR THE NEBRASKA GAME LAST WEEKEND...SHE PICKED UP A BIRTHDAY PRESENT FOR MY HUSBAND, KARL...A HAT, AND SWEATSHIRT. I CAN'T WAIT TO GIVE THEM TO HIM.

DID I TELL YOU MY DAUGHTER, KARLY, GOT A JOB AT THE NEW 'HOUSE OF BLUES IN CLEVELAND WHERE SHE GOES TO COLLEGE.

I HAVE BEEN RIDING MY RECUMBENT BICYCLE. STARTING OUT SLOW SINCE IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I RODE IT LAST...I'M GONNA HOLD TO A STRICT SCHEDULE. HAVE TO STAY FIT, DON'T WE...

ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU AND ALL THE RICCIO'S ARE IN MY PRAYERS.

Carl,
I was just thinking about last Thanksgiving and how great it was to spend it with you and your family. I hope you have a great holiday, and break from your studies this year . I read this message board all the time, you are always in our thoughts and prayers.
By the way, I was as excited as your Mom and Dad about whats happening in California. This will be mean huge advancements in this country in stem cell research over the next few years. Long overdue, but better late than never. Now I'm more of an Arnold fan than ever! "Terminator for President!"

dear carl
My son also had a SCI-his was C4/5 from a fall while snowboarding several years ago.

He is applying to college now for Fall 2005.I think that he would be a great correspondent for you as you might be able to talk about the college experience and how things work(or don't)at college. He'll be going somewhere here on the East Coast. We are looking for people who are using voice technology at college-How are you able to produce your work?

I will forward his email if you are interested.
This situation can be isolating.Even if someone has a SCI, sometimes they are not the right age or similar enough to have a lot in common.

I was thrilled for you that you are at college, but I know first hand there are a lot of hurdles to get over.He would like to socialize but it is difficult with new people, esp the girls.Perhaps you could start a club. Best of luck
